Twelve years before the events at the focus of the series, the nine-tailed demon fox attacked Konohagakure. It was a powerful demon indeed; a single swing of one of its nine tails would raise tsunamis and flatten mountains. It raised chaos and slaughtered many people, until the leader of the Leaf Village –- the Fourth Hokage – defeated it by sacrificing his own life to seal the demon inside a newly-born child, whose origins are as yet unknown. That child's name was Naruto Uzumaki.
The Fourth Hokage was celebrated as a hero for sealing the demon fox away. He wanted Naruto to be respected in a similar light by being the containment vessel for the demon fox. The village he grew up in, however, mostly shunned Naruto; they regarded him as if he were the demon fox itself and mistreated him throughout most of his childhood.
A decree made by the Third Hokage made it so that the other villagers were forbidden to mention the event to anyone, even to their own children. However, this did not stop them from treating Naruto like an outcast. Although their children did not specifically know why their parents treated Naruto the way they did, they learned through example to despise the boy. As a result, Naruto grew up as an orphan in a lonesome atmosphere without friends, family, or acknowledgment. He could not force people to befriend him, so he sought acknowledgment and attention the only way he knew – through pranks and mischief. However, that soon changed after Naruto graduated from the Ninja Academy by using his Multiple Shadow Clone Technique to save his teacher, Iruka Umino, from the renegade ninja Mizuki. That encounter gave Naruto two insights: that he was the container of the demon fox, and that there was someone besides the Third Hokage who actually cared about him. His graduation from the academy opened a gateway to the events and people that would change and define his world,including his way of the ninja for the rest of his life.
Naruto maintains a balance between drama and comedy, with plenty of action interspersed. It follows Naruto and his friends' personal growth and development as ninja, and emphasizes their interactions with each other and the influence of their backgrounds on their personalities. Naruto finds two friends and comrades in Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, two fellow young ninja who are assigned with him to form a three-person team under a very experienced sensei named Kakashi Hatake. Naruto also confides in other characters as well that he has met through the Chunin Exam. They learn new abilities, get to know each other and other villagers better, and experience a coming-of-age journey as Naruto dreams of becoming the Hokage of the Leaf Village.
Naruto places strong emphasis on character development. Almost all outcomes are a result of decisions, character, and personality; very few things happen just because of chance. At first, emphasis is placed on Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, who are the members of Team 7. However, other characters are developed, such as Kakashi, Guy, and Jiraiya, as well as Naruto's peers in the other Genin teams and other villages.
Several major villains came into play as well, the first being Zabuza Momochi, a missing-nin from the Hidden Mist Village, and his partner Haku. Later, in the Chunin Exam arc, Orochimaru is introduced as an S-Class missing-nin at the top of the Leaf Village's most wanted list. Later, a mysterious organization called Akatsuki begins to pursue Naruto in order to take the demon fox inside him.
1. Enter: Naruto Uzumaki!
Konoha 12 years ago. A Nine-Tailed Demon Fox attacked Konoha; in a final act to defeat the demon the 4th Hokage sealed its essence within the body of a baby boy whose umbilical cord had just been cut. The child now a young preteen called Naruto Uzumaki attends Ninja Academy; however because of the incident 11 years prior many in the village see him as the demon itself. As a result the only way he can get people's attention is to pull pranks and get in trouble. His dream is to become the greatest Hokage so he can then make the people of Konoha acknowledge his existence and respect him. Naruto's performance in school is less than perfect and the only person who talks to him is his instructor Iruka. When he fails the exam and doesn't graduate for the third year in a row he is tricked by Mizuki to steal the scroll of forbidden techniques. When Naruto finds out Mizuki's evil plan he runs away in confusion. When Naruto hears Iruka say good things about him he realizes that there is someone who cares about him. So, when Mizuki tries to hurt Iruka, Naruto becomes angry. He then uses a technique he learned from the scroll, called the Shadow Clone Jutsu, and beats up Mizuki. Iruka then gives Naruto the surprise that he graduates the academy. Meanwhile the Hokage looks on through a crystal ball.

The group struggles to find a Bikochu, but seems to fail at every turn. Naruto messes up a few times, nearly getting them eaten by a giant Bikochumo bug in the process, while the group continues to be watched. However, when it starts raining, they only have one more chance to find it. Thanks to Hinata's Byakugan, they succeed in finding one. Their celebrations are short lived though, because Hinata's kidnapping forces them to make a critical decision.

With Neji unable to see through the mist, things aren't looking too good. He is tricked into thinking that random objects are real people by a mysterious jutsu. Rock Lee manages hold Raiga off by fighting while still unconscious. When a mysterious case is knocked off of Raiga's back, Raiga becomes weaker and is eventually defeated by Naruto. When the gang opens the case, they discover a young boy named Ranmaru. What is his connection to Raiga? Why doesn't he attack them? Naruto is about to find out a shockingly similar story. With Raiga seemingly dead, the gang heads back to find Karashi waiting for them. It turns out to be a trap as the Kurosuki Family ambushes them. Luckily, Naruto fools them not once, but twice, with his clones. With the enemies defeated, the villagers focus their anger on Karashi as he was the one who orchestrated the attack. Rock Lee intercepts them and says that Karashi is still young and weak, and that it is partially his fault Karashi joined the Kurosuki Family. Lee begs them to let him return to his mom, and if Karashi tries anything again, Lee will punish him himself. The villagers agree and the group heads back, but not before picking up Ranmaru. They head back to the Curry of Life shop for a meal, where Naruto tries to retrieve information from Ranmaru. One question is still uncertain, is Raiga really dead? And what of Karashi, will he keep his promise?
